«Why Emerging Market Debt now?»
After the outbreak of COVID-19 Emerging markets had to contend with significant disruptions and subsequent slowdown in trade and economic growth, high inflation, and the subsequent higher-for-longer monetary policy environment, as well as heightened geo-political events.
However, four years have now passed since then, and we can see that EM is very much still standing and is demonstrating the resilience and robustness that we have typically associated with its developed market (DM) peers.
Looking ahead, 2024 will be an important year for EM particularly from an investor’s standpoint. Net flows for the asset class have been negative for several years but with stability now back in the market, and a clearer path to normality, clients will be looking to re-allocate to higher yielding asset classes such as EMD. This is particularly important during a time where DM yields are normalising, creating an element of re-investment risk, and a greater divergence in yields versus their EM counterpart.
