Zumindest für die Anleger endete der Sommer in diesem Jahr in Jackson Hole, Wyoming, mit der jährlichen Konferenz von Notenbankern und Wissenschaftlern. Die Botschaft der Reden von Fed-Chef Jerome Powell und EZB-Vertreterin Isabel Schnabel war unmissverständlich: Beide Zentralbanken halten an der zur Inflationsbe-kämpfung notwendigen restriktiven Geldpolitik fest und nehmen dafür deutliche Wachstumseinbußen in Kauf. Gleichzeitig geraten die Unternehmensgewinne, ins-besondere in Europa, durch steigende Energiepreise und ein wahrscheinliches Gasembargo unter Druck. In unserem Basisszenario gehen wir daher von einer Rezession aus, wenngleich Länge und Ausmaß des Abschwungs noch unklar sind. Dementsprechend fand die im Juni einsetzende Erholungsrallye Ende August ein abruptes Ende. Bei europäischen Aktien ist vorerst Vorsicht angesagt. Das bedeutet aber nicht, dass andere Regionen oder Anlageklassen keine Chancen bieten. Der Titel dieses Artikels liefert hier bereits einen Hinweis.
2022 - Resilienz gefragt
Für die Kapitalmärkte war 2022 das bisher schlechteste Jahr seit der Finanzkrise von 2008 - nur der US-Dollar und Öl konnten nennenswerte Renditen erzielen. Nicht nur Aktien verzeichneten seit Jahresbeginn zweistellige Verluste, auch zur Stabilisierung gedachte Anlagewerte wie Staatsanleihen boten keine Zuflucht mehr. Die Aktienrallye im Sommer wurde nicht nur von der Hoffnung auf eine weniger restriktive Geldpolitik genährt, sondern auch von besser als erwartet ausfallenden Unternehmensgewinnen. Bei näherer Betrachtung zeigt sich, dass diese überwiegend von Rohstoff- und Energieunternehmen stammten. Darüber hinaus gab es Marktbewegungen aufgrund von Aktienkäufen durch Anleger, die ihre Short-Positionen auflösen mussten. Angesichts der fortbestehenden Unsicherheiten planen institutionelle Anleger, die Risiken in ihren Portfolios weiter zu reduzieren, d.h. die Aktienquoten zu senken und die Duration kurz zu halten. Auch die Bewertungen bieten angesichts der steigenden Zinsen und der Rezessions-tendenzen keinen Sicherheitspuffer mehr. Der Fokus sollte daher auf Unternehmen liegen, die genügend Widerstandskraft haben, um sich in einem von steigender Inflation und rückläufigen Wachstumszahlen geprägtem Marktumfeld zu behaupten.
Der Markt für Staatsanleihen wird weiterhin durch weiter steigende Zinsen und eine Verflachung der Zinskurve gekennzeichnet sein. Auch mit einer sinkenden Volatilität ist nicht zu rechnen. Hinzu kommt das Risiko einer Fragmentierung, d.h. einer Ausweitung der Spreads einzelner Staaten, insbesondere im Euroraum.
Während Staatsanleihen zumindest in Europa wenig Perspektive bieten, sieht die Situation bei Unternehmensanleihen besser aus. Vor allem im High-Yield-Segment eröffnet sich gerade jetzt die Möglichkeit, hohe Spreads zu erzielen. Voraussetzung ist allerdings eine eingehende Bonitätsanalyse der jeweiligen Emittenten.
Moderate Rezession als Basisszenario
In unserem Basisszenario, dessen Wahrscheinlichkeit wir auf 60 % beziffern, gehen wir von einer moderaten Rezession in Europa gepaart mit einer globalen Wachstumsabschwächung aus. Dies könnte im nächsten Jahr die Inflation sinken lassen, wenn auch noch nicht auf die von der EZB angestrebte Marke von 2 %. Worauf sollten Anleger in einem solchen Marktumfeld achten?
Aktien: Unter den derzeitigen Umständen empfiehlt sich ein klarer Fokus auf Qualitätsaktien. Gemeint sind damit Unternehmen mit hoher Kapitalrendite, klarem Wettbewerbsvorteil, geringer Verschuldung und angemessener Bewertung. Meiden sollten man hingegen hoch verschuldete und energieabhängige Unternehmen, z.B. Chemie- oder Industriewerte. In regionaler Perspektive eröffnen Japan und die Schwellenländer mehr Wertpotenzial als die immer noch hoch bewerteten US-Aktien. Einige Anlagethemen bieten Ertrags- und Diversifikationspotenzial, gerade in einer Zeit des Umbruchs. Dazu gehört der ökologische Wandel, der durch die Notwendigkeit der Energieunabhängigkeit in Europa zusätzlich an Dynamik gewinnt. Zudem sind die Überbewertungen dieser Unternehmen inzwischen abgebaut. Auch das Thema Ernährungssicherheit steht durch den Krieg im Fokus. Um die wachsende Weltbevölkerung zu ernähren, muss die Nahrungsmittelproduktion bis 2050 um 60 % gesteigert werden, ohne dabei die Umwelt zu beeinträchtigen. Die notwendige Ernährungsrevolution eröffnet Anlagechancen in einem eher defensiven Sektor. Auch Unternehmen, die Sicherheitsleistungen für IT-Infrastruktur oder Online-Zahlungssysteme anbieten, weisen ein großes Wachstumspotenzial auf. Nicht zuletzt haben diese Themen überdies Widerstandsfähigkeit bewiesen, da sie im Jahresverlauf nur die Hälfte der Verluste anderer Indizes verzeichnet haben.
Renten: Mit dem Zinsanstieg haben sich die Bewertungen von Investment-Grade- und High-Yield-Anleihen in diesem Jahr verbessert. Eine weitere Ausweitung der Spreads ist nicht auszuschließen und wäre mit Verlusten verbunden. Historisch gesehen war jedoch der Beginn einer Rezession immer der beste Zeitpunkt, um schrittweise in den Markt für Hochzinsanleihen einzusteigen. Berechnungen auf Basis historischer Daten zufolge lassen die Spreads aktuell mit einer Wahrscheinlichkeit von 85 % eine positive Rendite von knapp 8 % erwarten. Zumindest bieten Hochzinsanleihen eine Möglichkeit, die Kapitalerosion zu begrenzen. Carry heißt das Zauberwort: Weiten sich die Spreads um 2 % aus, was erheblich ist, wird der Kapitalverlust durch Carry vollständig ausgeglichen (bei ansonsten gleichen Bedingungen).
Diversifikation: Mit Blick auf die Rezession werden die meisten Rohstoffe weiter an Wert einbüßen. Neben Gold oder Währungen (CHF, USD) lässt sich ein Portfolio auch durch Anlagen in nicht börsengehandelte Werte (Private Assets), und hier insbesondere Private Equity, diversifizieren. Zwar ist das Kapital hier länger gebunden, und zwischenzeitlich sind auch Wertberichtigungen möglich. Sobald aber die Krise vorbei ist, bieten sich attraktive Ertragschancen.
Ausblick: Noch sehen wir nicht den Moment gekommen, um die Risikoposition substanziell zu erhöhen. Dazu müsste die Inflation ihren Höhepunkt erreichen, die Zentralbanken müssten sich dem Ende des Zinserhöhungszyklus nähern, die Zinskurve müsste sich stabilisieren und wichtige Marktindikatoren müssten ihren Tiefpunkt markieren. Je nach Ausmaß der Marktkorrekturen werden wir damit beginnen, allmählich Positionen in Risikowerten wie Aktien und Hochzinsanleihen aufzubauen. Anleger sollten nicht vergessen, dass sich in volatilen Märkten stets die besten Gelegenheiten bieten, um den Grundstein für eine gute Performance in der Zukunft zu legen.
