„Wir befinden uns im Krieg“, erklärte der französische Staatspräsident am 16. März 2020. Wir kämpfen gegen einen unsichtbaren, aber nicht unbesiegbaren Feind. Dieser Krieg hat gerade erst begonnen, und die Künstliche Intelligenz (KI) kann einen wesentlichen Beitrag zur Eindämmung der Virus-Pandemie leisten.
Die Forschung kann sich heute die Neuerungen zunutze machen, die zur Entwicklung von KI geführt haben – Cloud Computing und Grafikprozessoren (GPUs). Dank Cloud Computing ist Rechenleistung heutzutage über das Internet verfügbar, so dass Forschungszentren keine gigantischen Rechenzentren für die Simulation von Molekülen und die Erforschung des Coronavirus mehr benötigen. Forschern stehen mehrere Anbieter wie AWS (AMAZON), Azure (MICROSOFT) oder AliCloud (ALIBABA) zur Verfügung. Möglich wurde dies dank Unternehmen wie FOLDING AT HOME – ein kollaboratives biomedizinisches Forschungslabor – und NVIDIA, Weltmarktführer für Grafikprozessoren, denn das Grafikprozessor-Computing eröffnet der Forschung eine neue Dimension. Diese Grafikprozessoren beschleunigen KI-Algorithmen und die Simulationssoftware in der Biotechnologie, die Forscher für die Analyse des Virus und die Entwicklung von Medikamenten und Impfstoffen einsetzen. Dieser gewaltige Schub an Rechenleistung mit über 470 PetaFLOPS (d.h. eine Billiarde Rechenoperationen pro Minute. Je nach Quelle ist das 25.000 bis 50.000 mal schneller als bei "normalen" modernen Computern) und somit mehr als die sieben schnellsten Supercomputer der Welt zusammen – wird wissenschaftliche Entdeckungen zweifelsohne beschleunigen.
Auch andere Initiativen mehren sich. So hat das „Allen Institute for AI“ in Seattle einen semantischen Analysealgorithmus entwickelt, der wissenschaftliche Publikationen zum Thema Coronavirus aus der ganzen Welt analysieren kann. Auf diese Initiative wurde die US-Regierung aufmerksam, die mehrere Forschergruppen dazu aufgerufen hat, sich ihr anzuschliessen1. Das kanadische Unternehmen BLUEDOT hat die Pandemie im Dezember 2019 entdeckt, als es eine wachsende Zahl von Lungenentzündungen in China beobachtete. Neun Tage später gab die WHO das Auftreten des COVID-19 bekannt. Andere Unternehmen wie HEALTHMAP in Boston und METABIOTA in San Francisco hatten vor dem unmittelbaren Ausbruch der Virus-Epidemie gewarnt. Diese Warnungen haben zwar keine sofortigen Antworten geliefert, aber erstmals eindrucksvoll die Prognosekapazitäten von KI verdeutlicht. Flankiert durch konkrete Aktionen könnten sie in Zukunft die Widerstandsfähigkeit unserer Gesellschaften und Volkswirtschaften verbessern.
Die gemeinsam und kollaborativ genutzte Rechenleistung treibt die Forschung voran, denn KI ermöglicht Wissenschaftlern in der ganzen Welt neue Erkenntnisse durch die Auswertung von rund 24.000 wissenschaftlichen Veröffentlichungen2, die bisher zum Thema Coronavirus erschienen sind. KI steckt zwar noch in den Kinderschuhen, aber die ersten Schritte sind sehr vielversprechend.
