Sowohl die Finanztheorie (Fama & French) als auch empirische Untersuchungen haben nachgewiesen, dass europäische Small Caps über einen längeren Zeitraum betrachtet stets besser abgeschnitten haben als Large Caps. In den letzten zwei Jahren hat sich dieser Trend jedoch umgekehrt: Per Ende Mai 2023 wies der MSCI Europe Small Cap NR über zwei Jahre kumuliert ein Minus von 13% auf, der MSCI Europe Large Cap NR legte in diesem Zeitraum hingegen um 12% zu. Aktuell liegen Small Caps zudem um historische 33% hinter Large Caps zurück.
Im Folgenden wollen wir die Gründe für diese Underperformance näher beleuchten.
Wichtig für eine Anlage in Small Caps ist erstens die Erwartung guter Wachstums-aussichten. Schließlich reagieren die Gewinne von Small-Cap-Unternehmen mit einem geschätzten 4-fachen des Nominalwachstums sehr sensibel auf die Konjunkturlage. Zweitens wirkt sich jede geldpolitische Straffung der Geldpolitik negativ auf die Finanzierungskosten dieser Unternehmen aus. Die Kapitalkosten von Small Caps steigen viel schneller als die von Large Caps, was ihre relative Ertragskraft schmälert. Drittens beeinflusst auch die Liquidität die relative Performance von Small Caps. Nach Jahren der Liquiditätszufuhr und Bilanzausweitung ziehen die Zentralbanken nun Liquidität ab. Ein weiterer wichtiger Punkt ist, dass Marktbewegungen bei Small-Cap-Aktien sowohl nach unten als auch nach oben stärker ausfallen. Beispielsweise erholten sich europäische Small Caps ein Jahr nach dem Einbruch infolge der Subprime-Krise deutlich und legten rund 90% zu. Europäische Micro Caps kamen nur ein Jahr nach der COVID-19-Krise auf ein Plus von 115%. Damit soll nicht gesagt werden, dass Small Caps absolut gesehen kräftig aufholen werden. Vielmehr wollen wir damit aufzeigen, dass sich hier im Vergleich zu Large Caps ein interessanter Einstiegspunkt für eine signifikante Rückkehr zum Mittelwert bietet.
Zunächst ist zu erwähnen, dass das KGV von europäischen Small Caps In den letzten fünf Jahren deutlich gesunken ist (von 16,7 in 2018 auf nun 13,2). Bei europäischen Large Caps blieb die Bewertung relativ stabil (2018: 13,7, aktuell: 12,5). Zweitens erwarten Analysten ein Gewinnwachstum von 27% bzw. 16% für die Jahre 2023 und 2024, bei Large Caps gehen sie von 0% bzw. 7% aus. Die Frage ist nun, ob die Konsensprognosen nicht zu optimistisch sind. Unsere Analyse der historischen Daten hat ergeben, dass die Erwartungen – sowohl für Large als auch für Small Caps – häufig zu optimistisch sind und folglich jedes Jahr um jeweils fast 5% korrigiert werden. Dies bestätigt uns in unserer Einschätzung, uns wieder in Small Caps zu positionieren, da wir auf eine Konvergenz in Richtung Large Caps sowie auf absolute Performance setzen. Drittens sind bei Small Caps die gestiegenen Kapitalkosten mit einem EV/EBITDA (Unternehmenswert im Verhältnis zum operativen Bruttogewinn) von 8 – also einem zuletzt 2009 beobachteten Niveau – voll eingepreist.
Unser makroökonomisches Szenario spricht für eine sehr behutsame Neupositionierung in europäischen Small Caps
Trotz der hohen Volatilität bieten Small Caps aktuell attraktive Chancen. Zur Erinnerung: Wir sind gegenwärtig in Aktien leicht untergewichtet, da sich eine Verschärfung der Kreditbedingungen negativ auf die Wirtschaft auswirken könnte. Wir empfehlen, bei der Aktienauswahl sehr selektiv vorzugehen und nicht aus Euphorie zu stark auf bestimmte Marktsegmente zu setzen. Unsere Präferenz gilt Aktien mit angemessenen KGVs, soliden Fundamentaldaten und über dem Marktdurchschnitt liegenden Wachstumsaussichten.
Diese Positionierung ist die Antwort auf ein Marktumfeld, in dem die Diskrepanz zwischen den Signalen von Unternehmen (eher positiv) und der Konjunktur (eher negativ) noch einige Monate anhalten könnte. Zwar scheint der robuste Arbeitsmarkt vorerst das Geschäftsklima und das Verbraucher-vertrauen zu unterstützen. Insgesamt ist hier jedoch eine Entwicklung in eine weniger günstige Richtung zu erwarten. In unserem makroökonomischen Szenario scheint jedoch bereits eine Verschärfung der Kreditbedingungen in der Eurozone eingepreist zu sein. Damit verringert sich das Risiko, dass Anleger im Falle einer möglichen Rezession in der Eurozone negativ überrascht werden. Zudem rückt der Zinsgipfel der Zentralbanken immer näher. Eine Stabilisierung der Finanzierungsbedingungen könnte daher die Performance von Small Caps beflügeln. Hinzu kommt, dass sich die Marktbedingungen für europäische Small Caps aktuell verbessern, da die Liquidität im Bankensektor in Europa weniger angespannt ist als in den USA. Und schließlich werden die Unternehmen in einem Umfeld, in dem organisches Wachstum zunehmend schwieriger wird, Wachstum durch externe Zukäufe zu erreichen versuchen. Bei den jüngsten Transaktionen wie Rovio, Dechra und Majorel lagen die Aufschläge auf den Schlusskurs im Durchschnitt bei 30% bis 50%. Strategische Akteure profitieren von besonders attraktiven Bewertungen und fast sofortigen Gewinnsteigerungen. Trotz der zuletzt gestiegenen Finanzierungskosten bietet dies erhebliche Anreize. Die Grenzrendite präsentiert sich für diese Art von Fusionen nach wie vor sehr günstig.
Als Fazit lässt sich festhalten, dass sich die Konjunkturlage in den nächsten Monaten verschlechtern könnte, so dass eine deutliche Positionierung in Small Caps nicht angezeigt ist. Allerdings sind sowohl die Aussicht auf eine positive reale (d.h. inflationsbereinigte) Rendite als auch die aktuellen Bewertungsniveaus attraktiv. Daher ist eine Portfolioumschichtung für langfristig orientierte Anleger bereits jetzt durchaus überlegenswert, wenn sie eine hohe Volatilität und eine eingeschränkte Liquidität in Kauf zu nehmen bereit sind.
